One might wonder why we have four Gospels instead of just one. After all, they all describe the life of Jesus. Wouldn't one be enough? This question reminds me of a story about three blind men who encounter an elephant for the first time. When asked to describe it, one said the elephant was like a snake, another said it was like a tree trunk, and the third said it was like a huge barrel. Each of them was correct in their own way, but none had the complete picture.
Similarly, the story of Jesus comes to us from four different perspectives, each providing a unique and essential view of His life and mission.
Matthew: The Historian and Jew
Matthew, a historian and a Jew, meticulously shows us the historical necessity, purpose, and background of Jesus' coming. His Gospel is deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition, highlighting how Jesus fulfills the prophecies of the Old Testament. Matthew's account connects the dots for us, showing the continuity between the old and the new, the past and the present.
Mark: The Young Man of Action
Mark, on the other hand, is a young man full of strength and energy. In his writing, Jesus is portrayed as a powerful leader who gets things done and is not shy to use His powers to accomplish what needs to be done. Mark's Gospel is action-packed, fast-paced, and highlights the miracles and works of Jesus, emphasizing His divine authority and tireless dedication to His mission.
Luke: The Doctor and Scientist
Luke, a doctor and scientist, brings a different perspective. He shows us Jesus as one of us, emphasizing His human nature. Luke's Gospel delves into the details of Jesus' birth, His emotions, His suffering, and His compassion. Luke paints a picture of Jesus who feels our pain and understands our struggles, making Him relatable and approachable.
John: The Theologian and Beloved Disciple
Finally, we have John, who presents Jesus as the Creator and a loving God. John’s Gospel is deeply spiritual, focusing on the divine nature of Jesus and His profound love for humanity. John shows us a Jesus who loves us to the point of His own death, emphasizing the depth of His sacrifice and the extent of His love.
A "Fifth Gospel"
Every person who considers themselves a Christian should be able to write a "Fifth Gospel"—the story of their unique encounter with Jesus and the life they have lived since then.
My unique perspective on the Gospel and Christianity is deeply rooted in my diverse life experiences and upbringing. My mother inherited her Orthodox Christian faith from her family, and my father did the same with Catholicism, yet both were atheists, and I grew up without religious belief. In school, I interacted daily with Christians, Muslims, and atheists, which exposed me to a variety of beliefs and cultures.
My life took a dramatic turn when I was uprooted from a life of security, robbed of my future, and thrown into the chaos of civil war, witnessing the destruction and senseless violence that only the human mind can conceive. As a refugee, I was practically homeless for over two years, a period that profoundly shaped my worldview.
During this tumultuous time, I found solace and purpose in Christianity, eventually becoming a Protestant. This journey allowed me to explore many Protestant denominations, deepening my understanding of faith from multiple perspectives. After embracing Christianity, I chose to pursue academic studies in theology. Over the years, I have dedicated myself to preaching, teaching, and holding evangelical meetings in various churches, sharing the transformative power of the Gospel.
These experiences have shaped my unique approach to understanding God. If invited to speak at your church or home I will bring this distinctive and fresh perspective on the Bible and Gospels, offering insights that are informed by my journey through life's ups and down, different faith traditions and my personal connection with my savior Jesus Christ. My story and approach aim to inspire and deepen each person’s appreciation of the Gospel’s richness, fostering a closer and more personal connection to the teachings of Jesus, and encouraging everyone to create, live, and share their own 'fifth gospel.
